Greetings to the Bayous
Why We Serve There
+   The Louisiana Bayous have had the greatest unnatural coastal erosion of any coast in this country, due to the dams and levees along the Mississippi. The Mississippi River has been thus engineered since the flood of 1927, but often the solution to one problem creates another problem. Having once occurred naturally, there is no proper redistribution of silt in its delta. This coast is losing an alarming equivalent of a football field of wetlands every half hour or so. Barrier islands and wetlands that once served as buffers for hurricanes have been lost, thus leaving the entire region all the more vulnerable. Hurricanes strike farther inland and with greater intensity, as with Hurricanes Gustav-Ike and Katrina-Rita. Areas that are about to disappear today eerily foreshadow the future of towns north of the coastline. Your purchase of these photographs benefit communities devastated by recent hurricanes.

+  The people of this valuable delta region are an industrious, charming people with generational roots, many never having ventured away from their own community. They are content with their humble homes, wanting only to keep their wetlands from sinking and washing away. They do not have the resources to relocate, nor do they want to. They have been a people without a voice to defend their home, but they are quickly developing advocacy for themselves. Their deep faith and hope for the future sustain them as they graciously accept the aid of many volunteers and donors. Greetings in Christ strives to fund efforts.
